A portion of Buttercup's profits goes towards supporting our wonderful giving partner, the Mozambique School Lunch Initiative. We don't have a huge amount of profit yet, so luckily we are also able to send them some of our bras and knickers! Our relationship with MSLI gives us a greater purpose than just making people's underwear comfier (though that is nice too!). MSLI have allowed us to play a (very, very) small role in the work that they do: providing mentorship and support to young girls, ensuring boys and girls get the nutrition they need to flourish in school, and supporting local farmers. I'm very grateful that they have been willing to partner with us.

About the Mozambique School Lunch Initiative
The Mozambique School Lunch Initiative is a non-profit organization that aims to improve child nutrition and education in Mozambique, focusing on communities where there are high rates of children living in poverty and at risk of hunger.
As of 2022, the Mozambique School Lunch Initiative is providing free school meals to:
- 2,000 primary school students (grades 1-7) in seven schools
- 220 preschool students
- 80 secondary school students
These school meals are based on traditional Mozambican recipes that include locally-sourced ingredients, like beans, vegetables, sweet potatoes, peanuts and chicken. In this way, the food is fresh and delicious and also generates income for local farming families.
Impact
School meals have a profound impact for students in rural Mozambique, where over 40 percent of children suffer from chronic malnutrition and over half of students drop out of school by the fifth grade. The school lunches are a vital safety net for these kids, giving them the nutrition they need to grow and learn.
Key results of the school lunch program:
- Up to 53% higher school enrollment rates
- An increase in average attendance from 60% to 95%
- Improved nutrition, providing ½ of students' daily protein requirements
- Doubling farmer income by purchasing food locally
